Superman Returns

I was pretty excited about seeing this movie, since I was quite obsessed with superman as a child. I wore a superman shirt and cape pretty much everyday between the ages of 3-5. I'm told I wore it so much that the neighbors didn't recognize me when I eventually stopped wearing it. My brother and I used to begin each day wearing several tee-shirts of our favorite superheroes (we invented the layered look!). Throughout the day, we could take off a layer and become a different superhero, depending on the needs of the moment. In the mornings, we would walk around wearing 5 or 6 t-shirts - I'm not kidding - so we must have looked pretty ridiculous. The neighbors thought my mom was crazy for letting us do this, but she insisted that we dress ourselves and did not interfere with the results.... anyway, I was pretty excited to see this movie and it would be difficult for me not to enjoy it.

For those not up on their Superman history, this movie begins as Superman returns to Earth following a 5-year interstellar hiatus. Superman left Metropolis to return to his home planet, only to find that it had been detroyed, just like he had been told since his childhood. Back in Metropolis, Superman resumes his day job as a reporter, while still moonlighting as costumed do-gooder. Not everything is the same as he left it -- most notably his love interest, Lois Lane...

Kevin Spacey was great as Lex Luthor. Lois Lane was pretty hot, although I don't remember the name of the actress that played her. The story wasn't that compelling, although maybe its hard to make a great story around a god-like character like Superman. Atleast Batman has his dark side - its hard to make compelling internal dramas around a person who is perfect, minus a vulnerability to one particular crystal. Still, I thought the movie was fun, even with a pretty light story. The ending left it open to future installments, although I'll be surprised if this movie is capable of generating enough interest to get the next one made.
